About

Studio open by appointment. Carrie Johnson is a multidisciplinary visual artist and potter based in Brewton, Alabama. Johnson’s work explores place, landscape, and notions of the sacred and the sublime. In her pottery practice, Johnson utilizes Alabama sourced minerals such as marble, shale, and chalk to create unique glazes and clay bodies. Johnson processes these materials by hand and makes work in small batches and limited runs. Johnson's interest in local materials springs from a love of the beautiful glazes and processes of various ancient Asian ceramic traditions. The artists of these traditions utilized the materials they had at hand and mastered the alchemy of the process to create the beautiful works we still revere today. Johnson's practice aims to find a way to make works that reflect these ancient traditions while also referencing the landscapes unique to this present place and time. Johnson draws inspiration from ancient Asian Zen Buddhism–influenced ceramics traditions, and ideas of cosmology and quantum physics. Johnson’s work has received awards at several state craft shows including an “Award of Distinction” at the 2025 Kentuck Festival of the Arts.
